STORMDRUM all started when producer NICK PHOENIX decided to go down to the Record Plant in Los Angeles to record some big film grooves for movie trailers he was working on. He hired some the best percussionists in the world (Tal Bergman, Richie Garcia, Michito Sanchez), and filled up Studio A with hundreds of drums. The Record Plant said they had never seen anything like it. After a complex setup, they were ready to roll. Everything was recorded through Neuman mics into an SSL Console to 2 inch analog tape and later transfered to 24 bit, 88.2 digital. Now, after years of recording, editing, and programming, STORMDRUM has arrived!
Actually you get 2 libraries when you purchase STORMDRUM. The INTAKT loops and the KOMPAKT multi-samples. There are 2 seperate interfaces, so that each category includes all of the features needed -
KOMPAKT has disk streaming and multi-timbral capability, as well as a host of other multi-sample parameters like auto sample alternation. This is the perfect interface for the multi-sampled kits and percussion.
INTAKT is the ultimate loop manipulation tool, and syncs the loops to the tempo of your sequencer. It has real-time time compression, cool lo-fi effects, and lots of other amazing features like legato looping.
The beats in STORMDRUM are the result of a desire to get a big film score sound, but not be derivitive. There are many different kinds of grooves with many variations. It would be a mistake to judge the sound of the library without listening to the many different loops. All of the more break-like grooves are based on live grooves and manipulated to sound more electronic. You will find many uses for these beats, but the intention was for them to be useful in film scoring.
The drum-kits and percussion multi-samples in STORMDRUM are really amazing! Everything has 10-24 way velocity switching with left and right hand samples. The sound is BIG and sometimes AMBIENT when neccesary. There are 32 GM drumkits with automatic alternation of left and right hand samples built into each kit (snare, hats and toms). To access the full drum library, users can load up all the individual elements and make up their own 88 key kits. No combination of kicks, snares, hats, toms and cymbals ever overlaps. Load one of each, using 5 of the 8 multi-timbral parts and set the 5 programs to the same midi channel. Instant custom 88 key drumkit! The 88 Key drum setups don’t utilize automatic alternation of samples, but rather give users direct control. The electronic samples are all derived from the acoustic samples in the library. As a result, they are very original sounding, but also quite familiar. There is even an organic velocity switching tech kit and other goodies like metal shop and prepared piano.
The percussion is really nice and extensively multi-sampled. There are some really useful and unusual gems in there. There is a big emphasis on big sounding drums. The 7 man Thunder Ensemble is a first in commercial sample libraries.

The library includes a stunning new state-of-the-art plug-in audio engine/interface from NATIVE INSTRUMENTS which is specifically designed for rhythmic loop playback, manipulation, and mayhem.
The convenient one-screen interface is based on (and provides all the sound manipulation tools of) NI’s new INTAKT sampler, and features tremendous sound shaping abilities without disrupting the creative flow, including a first-class multimode filter, an envelope follower, two LFOs, effects, and more. The loops have been set up so that they can be automatically synced to tempo, either via the Beat Machine or the Time Machine. The Beat Machine has loops divided into their individual hits (slices) which means they can be played at a wide range of tempos without any change in pitch. It also allows the user to give each hit individual settings for pitch, playback direction, pitch envelope, amp envelope, distortion, delay, and more; a MIDI file of each loop can be easily exported so that groove, accent, and feel can be manipulated in any host sequencer. The Time Machine time-stretches or compresses loops in real time.
Not only can you sync, stretch, and pitch the loops, but also filter, effect and modulate them as well! A powerful sound-shaping filter, flexible envelopes, syncable LFOs, and distortion, syncable delay, and lo-fi effects can inject even more energy and individuality into the loops. Stormdrum from East West is a huge sample library of drums and percussion, all packed onto two shiny DVD discs. Disc 1 contains single-shot sounds, mapped across the keyboard in Native Instruments Kompakt format, and the Kompakt player is included. Disc 2 contains drum and percussion phrases in Native Instruments Intakt format, and again, the Intakt player is present and correct.
Intakt provides tempo-independent phrase playback using either beat-split or timestretch processes, which means you can mix and match phrases of different tempos and synth them together with your project. Both Kompakt and Intakt are compatible with both PC and Mac platforms, and will run as stand-alone, VSTi, RTAS and DXi plug-ins. Stormdrum was originally conceived by Quantum Leap producer, Nick Phoenix. The original vision was to produce a unique sound that was reminiscent of a big film score, but the sounds are equally acceptable for use in regular music production, particularly when working with dance and ambient styles.
Recorded at the Record Plant, Studio A in Los Angeles by Nick and three world-class percussionists, over 6GB of material is presented here for you to use. It's taken several years to complete the editing and programming from the 24-bit, 88KHz digital transfers. The originals were recorded to two-inch analog tape, using Neumann microphones exclusively through an SSL mixing console. And when you hear the samples in action, the production quality really shines through.
The end product includes 32 multi-sampled drum kits, featuring between 10 and 24-way velocity switching, as well as left and right-hand performances in order to cover paradiddles. The percussion include ethnic instruments, velocity-switched organic tech (processed), over 100 metal-shop noises and some big industrial hits. A prepared piano sample set also gives you the opportunity to play a piano via percussion, which is just perfect for creating some menacing horror sounds. Phrase-wise, hundreds of evolving drum beds are provided along with action tom fills and some dexterous rhythm dynamics for breeding tension. There are usually several versions of each phrase to blend between, as well as ending hits to finish them off. Most of the phrases really do sound impressively larger than life.
The key mapping has been carefully considered. It's easy for users to assemble their own 88-key kits from components, because the sample library has been engineered to ensure that no combination of kicks, snares, hats, toms and cymbals ever overlap. This means that you can load up five of the multi-timbral slots and set them to the same MIDI channel to achieve a super-custom kit in a snap.
The phrase library contains some excellent grooves and riffs. There did seem to be a tendency for some to exhibit a similar feel, but that's largely an unavoidable by-product of the intended genre. A hybrid Tribal Terminator, perhaps?
The NI Beat Machine enables you to alter phrases by processing each slice separately. Pitch, pitch envelope, playback direction, amplitude envelope, distortion and delay can all be set on a per-slice basis. In addition, you can filter, effect and modulate the loops, including sync-able delay and LFOs. To afford the canny digital musician a little more flexibility, a MIDI file can be exported of each loop's groove template, or slice points. This means that the groove, accent and feel can be loaded up and manipulated in any host sequencer, which enables you to construct and play a new, custom-built version of the original sample phrase.
So far, so good - but that's not to say that East West Stormdrum is completely without it's faults. In terms of performance, the collection suffers a drawback from being a sample-based library in that it can take quite some time to load up each sample set. The can be reduced with disc streaming, but some degree of delay is inevitable. With so much material to sort through, it can take a good while to locate and load the sample that you're looking for. Basically, it's the downside of being spoilt for choice.
Furthermore, the NI players are fairly efficient but they do demand that users have a powerful machine at their disposal - especially if your project requires you to run several task-based libraries simultaneously. In this respect, fast disc space is the first hurdle. A 500MHz CPU and 256MB of RAM is the recommended minimum PC specifications, and disc streaming will impact on any audio hard-disk recording tasks.
However, the simple question of whether the collection actually sounds any good always lurks at the bottom of a sample library review, and the good news is that Stormdrum has absolutely no problems here. If it's top-quality audio that you're after, rest assured that this diverse collection more than delivers.
